Pulled Pork BBQ Sandwiches made in the Crockpot
Pulled Pork Sandwiches Made with A Delicious Pork Rub and BBQ Sauce –
When I stopped by the meat department at my local grocery store to ask what type of pork meat they thought was best for pulled pork sandwiches, the man behind the counter said a “butt roast.”
This was surprising to me because typically I would use a delicious pork loin to make family-style pulled pork sandwiches for dinner.
But these pulled pork sandwiches were going to be pork sliders and made for a Christmas party as part of a buffet so I thought I would ask the professional.
I took the advice of the meat department, and ended up buying what was called a Pork Shoulder Boston butt roast.
Good Choice!
These turned out to be some of the best pork sandwiches/sliders I have ever made. If you are having a party or a bigger crowd than usual for a football party or even a brunch, this recipe is perfect for making about 20-25 little pork sliders.
Crockpot Pulled Pork BBQ Sandwiches
Having a party? Cook up this 5 lb. Pork Shoulder Roast in your Crockpot. Will make roughly 20-25 pulled pork sliders.
- 1 5 lb. Pork Shoulder Roast
- 1/2 tablespoon olive oil
- 2 medium onions, cut in half
- 1/2 cup water
- 2-3 packages slider buns
FOR THE PORK RUB
- 1/3 cup brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon dried cumin
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 2 teaspoons paprika
- 3/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
-
In a small bowl, mix together all the pork rub ingredients.
-
Rub the pork with olive oil and then the pork rub mixture. Let sit out for about 20 minutes.
-
Place pork in the crock pot.
-
Add the onions in large pieces around the sides of the roast.
-
Add the 1/2 cup of water.
-
Cook on low for about 4 hours and then bump the heat up to high for an hour. Cook 3-4 more hours on low.
-
Drain off the liquid and either remove the onion pieces or leave them in the roast to shred.
-
Shred the pork with 2 forks and mix in about 1-1/2 cups of BBQ Sauce.

This is a pork loin roast and will also work well with pulled pork sandwiches. Typically I made this as a pork roast for dinner and then use the leftover pork to make the sandwiches. Just mix with BBQ sauce and you have two tasty dinners!

This is the Pork Shoulder Boston butt roast that I purchased at the grocery store. It was a 5 lb. roast and as you can see was marbled with fat which added a ton of extra flavor.
It takes a little bit longer to cook a 5 lb. roast in the crockpot, but the extra time was well worth the pork sandwiches. They were super-delicious and everyone at the party loved them.
We ended up trying the Heinz BBQ Sauce and picked the Kansas City Sweet & Smokey. It was scrumptious and will definitely buy it again. A great choice in BBQ sauce for these pork sliders.
