How to Make Delicious Crockpot Applesauce
We bought some fruit trees about 3 years ago, and the apple trees have totally taken off this year. We have two – a honey crisp (yum) and some kind that is good for pies and applesauce – ugly looking apples, but good and rather tart. What are you going do with all of them?
First off, crockpot applesauce!
I got the ideal gift for me for my birthday – an apple peeler/slicer/corer !
If you are going to put up a large amount of apples, this little appliance can’t be beat. I am not one to buy every new gadget that comes on the market, but there are a few that are well used and make life much easier. You have probably seen one of these, it slice and/or peels and/or cores. Just put the apple on and turn the handle.
If you do a lot of peeling of apples or potatoes, this is well worth the $15 -$20 price tag. Here’s a great one that I would recommend: [easyazon_link identifier=”B001DLTD1C” locale=”US” tag=”dinnerd06-20″]Johnny Apple Peeler by VICTORIO[/easyazon_link]
I made my applesauce in the crock pot. I put in as many apples as I could, sprinkled in a little cinnamon, and put the lid on for 4 hours. You do not need any water, as the apples will release a lot of juice. My newer crock pot only took 3 hours. I have read that the newer crock pots cook at a higher temperature so that food is completely done. If you ask me, they cook too hot, and I usually use my old one. But I digress. I then use my immersion blender (one of my other “must have” gadgets!) to blend it smooth – even though the apples are so cooked down that you can just about smooth them out with a spoon.
I did this batch with no sugar, and decided I would like it with a little more sweetness.
To the next batch, I added about ½ cup turbinado sugar to each crock pot, and the taste was perfect. Apples in January? Yes, please!
The unsweetened applesauce? I made something yummy with it…stay tuned…
Easy Crockpot Applesauce
- Enough apples to fill a crock pot, peeled, cored, cut up (about 8 – 10 apples)
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon (or to taste)
- 1/2 – white, brown, or turbinado sugar (Add to your liking if you want your applesauce a little sweet.)
Let apples cook in the crock pot/slow cooker for about 4 hours,
then blend using an immersion blender, food processor, or blender.
Store in the freezer in containers or freezer bags.
2 filled crock pots made 7 freezer bags with about 2 cups per bag.
And that’s how you make the best CROCKPOT Applesauce!
